As you'll see in the performance section below, the Ryzen 5 3580U (a one-off chip design custom-made for the Surface Laptop 3) doesn't offer class-leading performance, but it's more than enough for basic computing tasks and light gaming. If you want a more powerful CPU, you'll have to spend even more: The $2,099 configuration comes with an AMD Ryzen 7 3780U processor, 16GB of memory, and a 512GB SSD. It's a shame that you've got to spend an extra $500 to get a black finish and boost the memory and storage to levels befitting a premium laptop. The Asus ZenBook 15 is slightly-but not meaningfully-more compact in width and depth, at 0.7 by 13.9 by 8.7 inches and 3.7 pounds. The 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro measures 0.61 by 13.75 by 9.5 inches and weighs 4 pounds, while the Dell XPS 15 is 0.66 by 14.1 by 9.3 inches and 4.5 pounds. The 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 measures 0.57 by 13.4 by 9.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.4 pounds. Comparing dimensions is not very instructive. Other than holding the Surface Laptop 3 in your hands, there's really no way to tell the difference between it and a 16:9 laptop with the same screen size. It's a simple, clean look, though, made even cleaner by the elegant black finish of our review unit.
The overall aesthetic isn't what I'd describe as cutting-edge or striking, especially since there are rather thick borders around the display. Such a collection of windows would be squint-inducing and far less useful when displayed on the more conventional 16:9 widescreen displays of most 15-inch laptops, or on the smaller 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 3.
